Limitrophe
A limitrophe is a border state or territory formed on the periphery of a larger empire or power. The term comes from the Latin word limitrophus, meaning “bordering” or “adjacent to a frontier.”
Originally, the word limitrophe referred to a border region of the Roman Empire that was required to support the special units of imperial troops stationed on its territory—the limitanei.
