Determinant

A determinant (from the Latin determinans, “determining”) is a factor, cause, or condition that influences how a process unfolds. The precise meaning depends on the field:
In mathematics: A determinant is a scalar value associated with a square matrix. It is used to solve systems of linear equations and calculate areas and volumes, among other applications.
In economics and science: A determinant is a key factor or cause affecting economic, social, or biological processes.
In linguistics: A sentence-level adjunct is a secondary element that modifies a sentence as a whole rather than a specific constituent. For example, in “In the forest, it smells of pine needles,” the opening phrase provides a setting for the entire statement.
In botany: Determinate plant varieties (especially tomatoes) have genetically limited growth and stop growing after producing a characteristic number of flower clusters.
